The destination was fabulous
Where I found this hike: Summit County Explorer - Hiking Trails (My Review)
I truly enjoyed this hike. The review in the link provided are very valid.
Even though this was the 4th of July in Summit County, the trail was not crowded at all.
I ran into a total of 7 people (2 of them where multiple-day backpackers) and everyone respected everyone's privacy. This trail head can be used to start and/or end a backpacking trip, it meets up with the Gore Range trail.
I ate my packed lunch at the lakes (which was my destination) and relaxed enjoyed the quite and the view. It was fabulous.
My biggest recommendation for this hike is to wear long pants. at least this time of year, it is a narrow trail that the vegetation hangs over. I didn't see any poisonous plants but I believe you would still be very itchy and have many cuts on your legs. Also there was lots of dead trees standing that were very creaky. I would not want to be on this trail in a high wind.
Also get there early - Parking is very limited.
Is this hike for kids?
My rating for hiking this for kids is 5 (1 being Low, 10 being High).
There is some positives for doing this with kids:
1) You have enough variations in the terrain to keep them interested
2) The lakes are very cool
There are 2 reasons I give this such a low rating:
1) The vegetation that hangs over the trail is taller then most 4 or 5 year old kids. If you have a back back that you can carry them the entire way it would not be to bad. However, for my daughter this does not work. She wants to do some hiking and then she asks to get into the pack.
2) There is a short section that is steep, narrow trail, and a little bit of a drop off. Now I wouldn't think anything about this section, however with a kid you will want to pay extra attention.
Keep this one for older kids (above 8 years old).
